MeongSeok Bench

이 작품은 조선시대 서민들이 일상 속에서 널리 사용하던 멍석을 주요 재료로 활용한 2인용 의자이다.
멍석은 작업, 휴식, 모임의 자리에 바닥과 몸을 연결하던 생활 도구로, 특별함보다는 일상의 보편성을 지닌 재료였다.
본 작업은 이러한 멍석의 평면적 구조와 유연한 물성을 가구의 좌면으로 전환하여, 바닥 중심의 생활 방식과 함께 앉는 행위를 현대적인 의자의 형태로 재해석하였다.

This work is a two-seat chair made using meongseok, a traditional Korean woven mat commonly used in the everyday lives of ordinary people during the Joseon Dynasty.
Meongseok functioned as a practical surface for work, rest, and gathering, valued not for ornamentation but for its everyday accessibility and utility.
By translating the mat’s planar structure and flexible materiality into the seat of a chair, this work reinterprets floor-based living and shared sitting as a contemporary furniture form.
